Juergen Strohmayer Studio is an architecture and research practice based in Accra and Vienna. Working across disciplines, geographies, and scales, the studio explores material innovations, typological adaptations, and climate-responsive strategies to create meaningful, context-driven spaces.
Our built work spans cultural, residential, and civic projects, often developed through long-term collaborations with artists, designers, institutions, and local communities. We engage architecture as a tool for spatial transformation—rethinking land use, resource cycles, and construction methodologies to propose sensitive and sustainable alternatives.
The studio’s portfolio includes projects such as Nubuke Extended, a reimagined arts campus in Accra with nav_s baerbel mueller; Surf Ghana Collective House, a community hub for sports and culture with Glenn DeRoché; and the Fair Trade Zone, a manufacturing and eco-tourism space with Chrili Car. Our work has been exhibited at the Venice Architecture Biennale (2023), the Belvedere Museum in Vienna (2024), Shibaura House Tokyo (2023), and the Austrian Cultural Forum Rome (2022), among others.
The studio is led by Juergen Strohmayer (Istanbul, 1990), a registered architect in Austria and Ghana whose work explores architecture’s role in social and environmental transformation. He is the co-recipient of the Holcim Gold Award for Sustainable Construction (2023) and was shortlisted for the AR Old into New Award (2023) with Glenn DeRoché. He was nominated for the prestigious Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative (2022) and was awarded the Tische Stipendium for Young Architects (2016).
Strohmayer has held postgraduate teaching positions at the University of Applied Arts Vienna (2017-21) and the Ethiopian Institute of Architecture (2015-16), where he led design studios and research seminars. He has also delivered guest lectures and participated in academic discussions at institutions including the African Futures Institute, Yale Center for Ecosystems and Architecture, and the University of Witwatersrand, contributing to global conversations on architecture, ecology, and urbanism.
